Thermal Power Plants In India
Thermal power plants are the biggest source of electricity generation in India. They use fossil fuels like coal, natural gas, or oil to produce steam which then drives turbines to generate electricity.
- Types: There are three main types of thermal power plants based on the fuel they use:
- Coal-based thermal power plants (most common)
- Gas-based thermal power plants
- Diesel-based thermal power plants (least common)
- Installed capacity: As of January 2021, India's total thermal power plant capacity was:
- Coal: 206,404.50 MW
- Gas: 24,956.51 MW
- Liquid Fuel (Diesel): 509.71 MW
- Benefits:
- Reliable source of energy
- Can be built relatively quickly
- Relatively low upfront cost
- Issues:
- Air pollution from coal burning
- Water pollution from ash disposal
- Greenhouse gas emissions
- Reliance on non-renewable resources
The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) maintains a list of thermal power stations in India, which is updated periodically. You can find the latest list on their website here: cea.nic.in.
